Over 530 projects supported
Over £15 million of funding distributed
and £35 million of other funding attracted to Lancashire
To celebrate the Fund’s 10th anniversary in 2008 an extra £1m of funding was granted to two major Lancashire projects:
£500.000 to support a major extension and sustainable energy solutions for Halton Youth and Community Centre, near Lancaster
£450,000 to support the infrastructure of Brockholes, a new wetland nature reserve near Preston.
Community and Environment
- 193 public open spaces improved and created 1 MSc programme in Sustainable Waste Management supported at the University of Central Lancashire
- 34,000 metres of cycle paths improved and created
- 5,500 metres of footpaths/bridleways improved and created
- 59 play areas refurbished or created
- 76 community facilities renovated or improved from installing new kitchens to major refurbishment schemes to renewable energy schemes
- 54 existing natural habitats improved, managed and maintained
- 500+ hectares of woodland planted or improved
- 4 river habitats regenerated long-term
- 2 urban greenspace regeneration schemes
- 23 natural environment and community facility research and feasibility studies conducted
- 27 environmental work placements supported (11 going on to full-time employment in environmental fields)
- 2 management projects improving locally and nationally important nature reserves to assist with the recovery of species and habitats identified in local and national Biodiversity action plans
- 2 Dirtworks projects with young people involved in improving the environment
- After Landfill Tax regulations were amended by the Government in April 2003 the Fund has been unable to support any further waste projects.
Waste
- 100,000 free home composting bins distributed to householders across the county
- 40,000+ tonnes of recyclable and compostable waste diverted from landfill
- 14 pilot recycling schemes in partnership with Lancashire local authorities
- 10 community composting and recycling schemes supported
- 9 waste education projects including 2 countywide programmes reaching over 80% of county primary schools
- 4 projects working with small and medium sized enterprises to improve waste and resource efficiency
- 4 furniture reuse projects supported
- 2 social enterprises supported – Furniture Matters and Prosperity Recycling
