The
North of England and Scotland together have 40% of the wind
resource of Europe. This gives the UK huge potential to generate
electricity from the power of the wind. The new generation
of small-scale wind turbines offers householders, businesses
and community organisations the opportunity to generate their
own power and make their contribution towards reducing carbon
emissions.

There are two basic ways to install a wind turbine.
Grid
connected - as its name suggests, the turbine is connected
to the local utility grid and provides power to the household
when there is wind, replacing that supplied by the mains.
When there is no wind the mains takes over seamlessly. During
periods when there is surplus power many utility companies
pay turbine owners for their exported power.
Off-grid
systems - power from the turbine is stored in batteries
and then fed to where it is needed through a sine-wave inverter.
At times of high demand or after a long period of calm weather
a diesel generator provides back-up power. The wind turbine
power cuts diesel consumption dramatically and provides clean
240v a.c. electricity, just the same as that delivered from
the mains.

What size turbine
do I need?
The
average household uses between 4,000 and 5,000kWhrs (units)
per year (this figure excludes central heating). Whether you
want to provide just some of your power or cover all your
needs there is a turbine the right size for you. Proven Energy
Ltd., based in Scotland manufacture 2.5kW, 6kW and 15kW turbines.
A 6kW turbine will generate 6,000 to 10,000kWhrs per year
depending how windy the site is. This is enough to run a family
home and make a small contribution towards the heating.
Your Carbon
Footprint.
To
work out how many kilograms (kgs) of CO2 you produce by running
your house on fossil fuels, add up all the kWhr (units) used
in one year, multiply that number by 0.43 and you will have
the number of kilogrammes. For example 5,000kWhr x 0.43= 2150kgs
of CO2. However, if you had used wind energy instead, the
CO2 would add up to a big fat ZERO!
Grant
Aid
The UK government offers grants to households, businesses
and community organisations to help with the cost of installing
renewable energy sources. To find out more look on the Low
Carbon Buildings Programme website-www.lowcarbonbuildings.org.uk.
